In May I attended LACNIC 33, which due to the covid-19 pandemic, had to be done online rather than in Colombia as intended. Nonetheless, I think the event was well executed. We had some great speakers, like Karen 'O' Donoghue from the Internet Society who talked about network time security.
The focus this year was on the region's readiness for ipv6 migration, and by the end of it I knew that our ISPs need to up their game, especially in here in Guyana.
In addition to learning how to implement ipv6 and secure routing techniques, these are some of the takeaways from the event:
5G is being tested in Peru by five carriers.
Carpet bombing tactics targeting satellite telecoms saw a 295% increase in the 2nd half of 2019.
Service provider respondents to the WISR reported a 52% increase in DDoS attacks on publicly exposed service infrastructures compared to 38% the previous year.
Attackers are now able to launch focused DDoS attacks by weaponizing several new UDP amplification vectors with combined variations of existing well-known attack vectors.
